A fax machine can do what?

Does your business have a fax machine? Ever update its firmware? Check Point Software Technologies recently disclosed a flaw within HP all-in-one printer fax machines that allows a hacker to send a fax to your machine and gain access to your business network. The hacker will send a fax and infect the fax machine, which allows the hacker to send commands to infect other connected devices and take over the network. The hacker can send commands to take documents, alter faxes received and sent, and install malware on the network. Check Point alerted HP prior to releasing this information so HP could address and patch this prior to Check Point’s release of the security flaw.

Fax machines have become almost an afterthought in the technology world, as most are built right into office printer and copiers. This is a great reminder that any device connected to the business network has risks and needs to be patched and updated regularly. These devices also need to be properly configured on the business network to prevent unauthorized access to other connected devices.
