Know your settings

Late last week KrebsOnSecurity reported that businesses who use Google Groups were exposing emails and business sensitive data because of widespread misconfiguration in Google Groups. Google is reminding customers who use Google Groups, part of Google’s G Suite, to review their privacy settings, verify which of their mailing lists can be public and indexed by Google, and verify which mailing lists should remain private.

This is a great reminder not only for small businesses that use Google Groups, but also for all small businesses to review their privacy settings on all their business tools. It is important to know what you are sharing with the public, whether intentional or by accident. It is also important to know what data your employees have access to and if they need it to perform their job duties.
